Dear Palmyra Community,
After much thought and deliberation, I will be resigning from my
position as Library Director at Powers Memorial Library with my last day being Saturday, December 10th. As you may have already heard, I have accepted a position as the Library Director with the Mukwonago Community Library. This has been a very hard-pressed and possibly one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make, but as I believe everything happens for a reason, this was an opportunity I simply could not let pass me by.
Serving the Palmyra community as the Library Director for the past year has been an extremely rewarding and enriching journey for me. When I started in the position, one of the goals set forth by the library board, was to create ‘a happy, warm, and friendly environment within the library’. I thought to myself, ‘Well, how difficult can that be?! With kindness, a willingness to help navigate the information highway, providing an accommodating and friendly atmosphere, and a little enthusiasm and innovation…no problem!’ Little did I know of the numerous relationships and friendships that would be built or of the children stopping me wherever I go to tell me that they love the library and are so excited to share with me what they are reading. Little did I know of the many hugs, the cultivating, daily visits and chats, the welcoming of me into your families and your lives, the conversations about our favorite and recommended books, the tours around Palmyra and the surrounding areas, the requests from children to have a story read to them, the collaboration and brainstorming on programs and events, the shared interest of our love of libraries and lifelong learning and curiosity , the endless laughs and smiles, and little did I know of what would be your unending support, patience, and loyalty. Each day I could not wait until those signs were switched from ‘Closed’ to ‘Open’ for every visit and interaction with each of you has been a cherished and an influential one. Little did I know of the unlimited potential, ambition, knowledge, and willingness of the library employees. Our conversations and collaborations each day were something I always looked forward to and something that always brought a smile to my face. Little did I know of the excitement and trust that I would receive from the Library Board and the perseverance and eagerness from the Friends of the Library. For all of this and so much more, I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me this amazing opportunity.
Throughout the past year, I was happiest when I could see and feel how much the community loves and uses its library. Libraries strengthen and build communities and exist to improve the overall quality of life and what would make me the proudest going forward would be continuing to see Powers Memorial Library flourish and to offer a place where people can come together and feel welcomed. I hope that this continues and this will only continue with the drive and support of YOU, the patrons.
It truly has been a pleasure and a joy serving all of you. Thank you again for the many wonderful and unforgettable memories and experiences. There will always be a special place in my heart for the library and the people of Palmyra. I realize the next weeks are the busiest for us each year, but if you have the chance to stop by between now and December 10th, I would love to say ‘Auf Wiedersehen’.
Finally, I wish all of you happiness and kindness this holiday season can bring and may it follow you throughout the coming New Year.
